A nice anecdote: the first time Mr. Powell was in Israel, around the time of the first Gulf War, his first words getting of the plane, spoken to then prime minister Itzchak Shamir, were: "Mir kennt retzt Yiddish" ("I could also perhaps speak Yiddish").
