Help! I have just been told that my favorite song, "Mack the Knife" is actually a love song. Can someone please confirm this, and do I need to find a new favorite song?

    Question #49462. Asked by philsgirl.

Depends on what you class as a love song:

Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear
And he shows ’em pearly white
Just a jack knife has Macheath, dear
And he keeps it way out of sight

When that shark bites with his teeth, dear
    Scarlet billows begin to spread
Fancy gloves though has Macheath, dear
So there’s never, never a trace of red

On the sidewalk one sunday morning
    Lies a body oozin’ life
    Someone’s sneaking ’round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the knife?

From a tugboat on the river going slow
A cement bag is dropping on down
You know that cement is for the weight, dear
You can make a large bet Mackie’s back in town

My man Louis Miller, he split the scene, babe
After drawing out all the bread from his stash
Now Macheath spends like a sailor
Do you suppose our boy, he’s done something rash?

Old Satchmo, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darrin
Did this song nice, Lady Ella, too
They all sang it with so much feeling
That old blue eyes, he ain’t gonna add nothing new

But with this big band jumping behind me
Swinging hard, jack, I now I can’t lose
When I tell you all about Mack the knife, babe
It’s an offer you can never refuse

We got Patrick Williams, Bill Miller playing that piano
And this great big band bringing up the rear
All the band cats in this band now
They make the greatest sounds you’re ever gonna hear

Oh, Sookie Taudry, Jenny Diver, Polly Peachum, old Miss Lulu Brown

Hey the line forms on the right, dear
Now that Macheath’s back in town
You’d better lock your doors and call the law
    Because Macheath’s back in town

That's a slightly amended version by some jazz singer - the list of musicians and such didn't appear in the original Brecht / Weill number. Love song - that it ain't. Why not have a love song as a favourite, anyway? Or are you into the lowlife violence typified by Macheath?

Old blue eyes = Frank Sinatra. Not "some jazz singer".

I was looking for the original lyrics but haven't been able to come up with them. The song was originally written in 1928 by Kurt Weill, E. Bertolt Brecht, and Marc Blitzstein as “Moritat” (The Flick Knife Song) or “Theme From the Threepenny Opera” aka “The Beggar’s Opera” and introduced in that production by Weill’s wife, Lotte Lenya.
    Here's Bobby Darin's version:

As far as it being your favourite song, songs appeal to people for all kinds of different reasons, you like the beat or the melody, you find the lyrics interesting, you particularly like the arrangement or the way a vocalist sings, and when everything comes together for you, that song becomes your favourite. I wouldn't worry about whether or not it has any mass appeal. I actually like Bobby Darin's version of Mack the Knife and never knew where it came from.

I thought it said something about me, that my favorite song wasn't a love song. And I really like the lyrics to this song. Most of the women I know have love songs as their favorites, I didn't want to be part of the crowd.
