I gather that fish scales are used in the making of lipstick. How are the fish scales used and what else does lipstick have in it?

Actually, fish scales are the ingredient which gives some cosmetics their "frost" or "pearlescence". Nail polish, eye shadow, blush; all have contained fish scales, though some companies now use synthetic substitutes to obtain that shimmery effect.
Most lipsticks are primarily waxes and oils combined to create a certain texture or consistency. Ingredients lists vary widely from type to type and from company to company, but often include coconut, sunflower or castor oils, canuba and/or beeswax, lanolin, Vitamin E and coloring agents. Most "natural" and many commercial lipsticks also contain various herbal extracts known for being beneficial to the skin.

I had not realised that they were one of the ingredients. Maybe that explains why we look like a goldfish in the mirror when we try to put it on.
