    It has been said that Columbus was inspired to discover the New World after hearing a story in an Irish port. What was the port, what was the story and did Columbus really visit Ireland?

    He visited the port of Galway in 1477, en route to Iceland.

    Part 2: Apparently he was told stories about St. Brendan (484-577 AD), who is reputed to have crossed the Atlantic and who is buried near Galway.
