Rhythm and blues (also known as R&B or RnB) is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, first performed by African American artists.

In 1947, the term rhythm and blues was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States by Jerry Wexler of Billboard magazine. It replaced the term race music, which originally came from within the black community, but was deemed offensive in the postwar world.

The stuff referred to now as R&B bears very little resemblance to what Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters used to do under that classification. It's a sort of mix of hip-hop, (c)rap - the c is always silent - and whatever else the DJs get paid to plug.

1 Disco Sucks! But not all late 70s music does...
Whoever said the late 70's sucked because of Disco doesn't know what they are talking about. Besides the music explosion during the sixties, I would say the years between '75 and '82 were the best years for music.
