Alfred E. Neuman. I've always suspected it didn't stand for anything in particular, and just now have found out for sure. Apparently, it was selected from a movie music composer's name, Alfred Neuman, and the creators of Mad simply added an 'E' to differentiate it.

At first the name was "Alfred L. Neuman" and unconnected to the boy. But later, when they decided to put the name and boy together, they named him "Alfred E. Neuman". It was only years later that associate editor Jerry DiFusco suggested the E stand for "Enigma". (Try my trivia quiz on Alfred in the Comics section)
