Why are CD's round and not square?

'Cos the corners would be waste material - you couldn't store meaningful data on them.

Because the laser that reads data on a CD rotates to follow a smooth tight spiral from near the hole gradually toward the outer edge. As Baloo suggests, data stored on material outside the usual area of a CD would be out of the range of the laser so would be a waste.
