After careful research I found it was actually James Lovel, the American astronaut who was the only man to fly on two missions into lunar orbit - one in Apollo 8 in which he orbited the moon ten times, and the other in Apollo 13 where he was headed for the moon but never got to land on it. Those two trips alone make up a total distance of just under a million miles, plus his mission in Gemini 12 in which he and Buzz Aldrin orbited the planet for the longest amount of time up to that date...
