    Question #49955. paulbunyan304 asks:

How many numbers are there on a roulette wheel?

    37 on a French one. (0-36)
    38 on an American one. (0, 00, 1-36)

...because the zeros on the wheels effectively amount to the house edge, the US Roulette system consequently takes more from the players. The House edge on the US system works out to just over 5% while on the French system it is around half this with 2.7%, and around half this again with even money bets. The advantages for the US system would be that it is faster.(but that could turn into a disadvantage if you are losing quickly I suppose...and it is spoken in English for those who don't speak French.)

French Roulette, all calls are made in French and the croupiers use little rakes to move the chips. (Also you are fortunate enough to experience the pomp and ceremony that goes with it...) But, the principle difference between them is that when zero comes up in the French version all stakes in the even money areas may be placed "en prison". Then the wheel is spun again to determine their fate. If the wheel falls in your favour you keep your chips; otherwise you lose them.
