How did the "eightfold way" get its name, in association with quantum mechanics of course?

The only one I know is from Buddhism, and describes the 8 steps of purification of mind, body and spirit including non-aggression, non-attachment, speaking the truth etc that lead to enlightenment. If you're talking about quantum mechanics though I'll have to sit this one out...

The eightfold way got its name because the groups of particles with associated properties naturally associated in octets; it was deliberately chosen from "the noble eightfold way" of the Buddhist religion. To Ne'eman's (founder for the particle scheme) disappointment, he was unable to make the particles fit a pattern based on the six-pointed star of David.
