The nineteen women who participated in the Paris games in 1900 competed in only three sports: golf, croquet, and tennis. Technically, there were no gold medallists in these games - first prize winners won a silver medal, second prize got bronze. Charlotte Cooper from Great Britain was the very first woman to win Olympic gold (it was actually silver) when she aced the women's singles tennis championship in Paris. American Margaret I. Abbott, an art student in Paris, was the first female U.S. medalist when she won with a score of 47 in nine holes of golf.
