Recently I visited Sir Isaac Newton's birthplace at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire. In his study there is an old wooden writing desk on which is carved the inscription IMANODI 1635. What does this mean?

I am going to surmise that the words are Latin and written in a contracted form:
iN manUS oBIT dEi 1635, which means: He (????the previous owner)went into the hands of God (i.e. died) 1635. Happy to be shown up as an idiot on this one.
