The Portuguese started to set up colonies in 1511, followed by the Dutch later who threw them out. They were in turn supplanted by the British who created new colonies (i.e. not pre-existing native states) at Penang and Singapore. They also took into the Federated Malay States (a confederation of the semi-independent native states) some states previously administered by Siam (as it was called then). Basically, these were the Moslem ones just south of the modern border. So Siam (Thailand) may also be regarded as a 'colonial power' in a way.

Slight correction - the ex-Siamese states weren't taken into the Federated Malay States, but stayed separate until the lot went into the Union of Malaya (replaced by the Federation of Malaya after a couple of years). Getting myself confused between Federations!

Portuguese captured Malacca 1511. Dutch replaced Portuguese 1641 held on until 1824 Anglo-Dutch Treaty (with intermission during the Napoleonic war). British established themselves in Penang 1786, Singapore 1816, and Malacca 1824. Northern States Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu came under British through Anglo-Siamese Treaty 1909. Japanese ruled between late 1941 to 1945. Malaya gained independence from the British in 1957. Malaysia was established 1963 with Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah, and Singapore.
