Gold, silver and bronze medals were first awarded at the London games in 1908. At the first modern Olympics in 1896, winners received silver medals while runners-up received copper medals.
The victory podium with its 1-2-3 positions didn't arrive at the Olympics until 1932.

Trust me to have the only book to say it was 1908!

Actually I have two books that say London introduced bronzes for third place in 1908 and one has info supplied by the Sydney Olympic Committee. Maybe I was correct after all.
