    		There may be differences of opinion about definitions.

    I think most people would probably say Newfoundland, where Sir Humphrey Gilbert established a settlement at St John’s in 1583.

    However, the Anglo-Normans had already invaded Ireland and occupied it after a fashion in the twelfth century.
