Why is the grass green?

Not all of it is. I've got red grass in a planter. Normal answer is chlorophyll (the stuff that does the photosynthesis bit). But - red grass, black leaves on Ophiopogon nigrescens, coppery leaves on the copper beech, and others..... Must be something else colouring over the green in those. Sep 01 04, 4:25 AM

There are different types of chlorophyll (chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, and chlorophyll C), which produce different pigments (green, yellow, & red mostly) this is the reason for the changing of the color of leaves in the fall (decreased aount of sunlight causes decreacse in photosynthesis, which means less green pigment is produced, so the other pigments show though). These other types of chlorophyll are probably responsible for the variation in the color of grasses. Sep 02 04, 9:03 PM

I was told as a child that grass was green so how do you know, for example, that the colour I see as green is the same colour that other people see? In the disney movie "The Aristocats" the character Thomas O'Malley sings his self-named song.
