    Question #50720. gmackematix asks:

Do the girl's name Sharon and the surname of the Israeli premier have the same origin?

    Arpeggionist

Could be. The name Sharon means "singing one" and is really the term for the middle of Israel's Mediterranian coast (from a bit south of modern-day Tel Aviv to Netania). The Sharon region was a very fertile one in Biblical times, and received high praises by the Biblical authors.

    [Sep 03 04 12:37 AM] Arpeggionist writes:

If you'll look up "shirah" or "shar" in any Hebrew-English dictionary you'll find the reference to singing. And the sharon is a very real place, with an estimated population of somewhere in the area of 2.5 million people (most of whom live in the greater Tel Aviv area). So this is where the Hebrew name comes from. As for the girl's name Sharon, yes, I admit I'm guessing.

As a forename in English speaking countries, the name Sharon may come from the Rose of Sharon flower - a hypericum or St John's Wort.

The Rose of the Sharon, again, comes from the place name as mentioned in the Song of Solomon. (A more modern translation would actually render it "eggplant of the Sharon", the Hebrew term is "chavatzelet haSharon.")
