Actually, the Hood Canal is neither a canal nor a river; simply a narrow saltwater inlet from the Juan de Fuca and Georgia staits.

It was named Hood in honor of Lord Hood, of the English Admiralty, by George Vancouver back in the late 18th century. Now, I'm not saying they had a thing going on, but Vancouver also named Mt Hood and Hood River in Oregon after the old boy.
