I think the one you're exactly referring to had far less zinc than ordinary brass, which is made of the same two elements, so as to look more like gold, and it's called 'Pinchbeck'

Named after Mr Charles Pinchbeck, the 18th century English watchmaker who discovered this alloy.
I don't know if Pinchbeck successfully fooled anyone with his imitation gold.
