Different camps had differnt systems for numbering the people who went through there. In Auschwitz there were several ways of separating the people besides their tatoos - they were even sorted by whether they were Jews, Gypsies, POWs or criminals. Each of the prisoners of the camps received a 5-digit number following the initial of the camp he/she had been to first.
