Before Hurricane Charley on August 13, 2004, what was the last major hurricane to strike Punta Gorda, Florida, and in what year?

    Question #50948. Asked by PokeyinFL.

Well, in 1960, there was Hurricane Donna, but that was a Category 3 to strike Fort Myers. I believe that is the most recent time a hurricane's eye has come within 20 miles of Punta Gorda. Before that, I am really not sure.

Greg, you are right that Hurricane Donna in 1960 was the last major hurricane to pass through Punta Gorda before Charley. It actually sucked the water out of Charlotte Harbor and then filled it back up again.
