Why has the famous work "Catcher in the Rye" never been made into a film?

    Question #50963. Asked by gmackematix.

    robboy

I have no citation, but it's my understanding that Salinger refused to sell the rights to the book.

I know robboy's already stated this but, I might add:
One of Salinger's works originally appeared in the New Yorker magazine called "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" which became the 1949 film My Foolish Heart. To say that Salinger was unhappy with the end result of his work translated to the big screen would be an understatement, and from that film onwards Salinger refused to ever sell the rights to any of his works to any Hollywood studio and hence the complete absence of a Catcher film.

The book was banned in Boron, California as recently as 1989 for a "goddamn". It was banned in another state for a "hell" and a "for Chrissakes".
I gather it is about a man (Holden Caulfield) who flees a boarding school and tries unsuccessfully to lose his innocence. I really didn't know much about the book besides the tendency of assassins to carry it about.
Thanks to Brinj, Peace, Robboy and Peasy for all the info.
