Born into a very wealthy Swedish family, this man was chosen to aid the rescue of Budapest's Jews during 1944/1945. Through his actions it is estimated that tens of thousands of lives were saved from the camps. He was eventually seized by the Russians and it now seems likely that he was killed by them shortly after the war. Who was this man?

I believe the correct answer is Raoul Wallenberg.

The correct answer is in fact Wallenberg. How unfortunate it was that he was jailed by the Russians and did not live to see a shred of reward for saving so many lives. Had he lived, he would have been granted honorary citizenship of Israel. Instead the Jerusalem municipality has just named a side street after him. The total amount of lives he saved actually topped 100,000 if I'm not mistaken.
