Even though water is clear, why is it when you make ice cubes they are cloudy and not clear?

Question #51117. Asked by trevynik. (Sep 21 04 12:38 PM)

The color you see in the ice is actually made up of very small pockets of air, bubbles really, that were caught in the water when it froze.

Not all cloudiness is air. Minerals, rust from an old water heater, too cold an ice maker, dirt from a leaky source pipe are all reasons for 'cloudy' ice.
