The following is listed as the first paid advertising spot:
1922- AT&T toll broadcasting began 1922; the first radio commercial was broadcast on Aug. 28 by the Queensboro Corp. that paid $100 for 10-minute message promoting the sale of apartments in Long Island; the AT&T stations were anchored by WEAF in New York with a "clear channel" and featured a broadcast of the opening of Congress 1923, and the Democratic National Convention 1924.
Altho the following are argued as the earliest ads:
1915-There was 1XE in Medford, Massachusetts, operated by Harold Power of the Amrad Corporation
The reason Harold J. Power created AMRAD and 1XE was that AMRAD sold receiving equipment, and 1XE was used to spread the word about the AMRAD product line. Every announcer who worked there was also an engineer at the factory. They made the radios during the day and then went on the air to demonstrate 'em!
1920-Frank Conrad's home station (call letters 8XK) more and more took on the appearance of a permanent radio station. Conrad's two sons regularly worked as announcers; the Hamilton Music Store in Wilkinsburg loaned records, for which favor it was mentioned on the air.
