Is there such a thing as a real "shrinking violet", a flower the expression is based on?

Question #51207. Asked by tjoebigham. (Sep 25 04 2:14 AM)

Hey Joe, sure haven't seen you name in these parts for quite sometime!

There isn't a specific plant called a shrinking violet, but the phrase does come from the violet and it's characteristics.

    "Viola Odorata"
Gender: Female Planet: Venus Element: Water
The heavenly scented sweet violet with its beautiful little flower that often hides beneath the leaves is a symbol of shyness & modesty.
Myths & legends are of abundance for this tiny flower, which have given us such phrases as 'shrinking violet & blushing violet'.
