How much advance notice does the prime minister have to give of a UK general election?

Question #51225. Asked by gmackematix. (Sep 25 04 7:12 PM)

    TabbyTom

The Prime Minister can recommend a dissolution of Parliament to the sovereign whenever he likes, He will not normally give formal advance notice, though the pundits will usually have some idea of what’s going to happen.

The period from a dissolution to the general election is fixed at 17 working days by the Representation of the People Act 1983. A working day is, broadly speaking, a day other than a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. This means that there are normally about three weeks between the dissolution of Parliament and the next election.

British general elections are customarily held on Thursdays, but this is not a legal requirement.
