How do people survive being hit by a bolt of lightning?

Although lightning has contributed to more deaths than any other weather phenomena, the odds of surviving a lightning strike are quite good.
Injuries that are sustained are usually not what people would expect. No, a person does not burst into flames, and no, the person is not "electrified" and dangerous to touch. These are just myths built over time. In reality, a person may not have many external symptoms at all.
