Demeter was the Greek goddess of agriculture and was responsible for the seasons in which crops grew (therefore the harvest); (almost) nothing grows in the Fall and Winter because that is when her daughter Persephone goes to Hades. According to the Dictionary of Classical Mythology and the Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary, she is the Greek divinity of agriculture (Ceres is the Roman).
