Who invented buttons, or better yet, when were they invented? And while we are on the topic, what is the origin of the word 'button'?

Buttons have been found as far back as the Bronze age when they were worn as ornamentation. They were used to decorate belts and other metal objects. They have been noted in virtually every important civilization. Some cultures such as the Romans may have used them as fastening devices, but this is not proven. Rudimentary buttons appear to be first used for fastening by Europeans in the 13th century, but were much more common in the 14th century. Tunics and shifts were very popular for a long time because all you had to do was put them over your head, or tie a large tunic/robe with a sash. There were lots of intricate and pain-in-the-you know what ties and sashes that went with more complicated and stylish clothing before buttons were used, however; that is why you really had to have a dresser in those days.
