I read that Coca Cola was originally laced with cocaine. Is this true and if so, what is it that replaced the substance?

Coke was never 'laced' with cocaine. Coca-Cola used to use coca leaves to flavor their drink, so small amounts of cocaine were in the final drink. Now, Coca-Cola is flavored with 'spent' coca leaves, so there is almost no cocaine in the final product (it is impossible to remove 100% of the cocaine from the leaves, so there is still *very* small trace amounts of cocaine left inside of the drink - billionths of a milligram).
Now, nothing replaced cocaine in the drink - caffeine was always present inside of the drink. But after cocaine was removed, Coca-Cola Co. stopped marketing the drink as a 'medical cure' for various diseases.
