It is the most famous symbol of Lloyd's of London. It was traditionally rung to herald important announcements to underwriters and brokers - one stroke for bad news and two for good.
It came from the French frigate La Lutine, which surrendered to the British in 1793. About 6 years later the boat sank and in 1858 the wreck's 80lb bell was recovered from the sea bed and hung in the underwriting room which Lloyd's occupied in the Royal Exchange in the City during the 1890s.
