To a TV engineer a 'channel' is the frequency that a particularTV company is allowed to broadcast on. Here in the UK these 'channels' are 8 megahertz wide, and the lowest number set by the government for TV reception is channel 21, with a center frequency of 474Mhz.The highest is channel 68 at 850Mhz.

In Israel, officially, they do start on channel 1, and before 1993 there were only two Israeli stations (we also got Mid-East TV and Jordanian stations, which sometimes had better shows).

In the US the TV channels start at 2 because the frequencies for 1 had already been given out for use to radio stations. They assigned 2 to TV and never bothered to change it.

Believe it or not, my remote control only has four main buttons on it: "Channel Up", "Channel Down", "Volume Up", and "Volume Down." So, I have to go through all the channels to find something to watch. Why don't you join me?
