I have noticed the term 411 appear in many of the R&B records of recent times. Mary J Blige had an album called the 411 and there is a girl group called the 411, but what does 411 actually mean?

411 is the number you dial to get "Information" in the United States. It's an operator that will search for a phone number and/or address when you give them a name and city.

Or more clearly, dialing 411 on a US phone will connect one to an information service. These services will give out the phone numbers of specific listed last names, or businesses, in specific towns or cities.
