With regard to human eyes, does the colouration of the iris serve any purpose, and do different colours have any significance?

It is down to melanin. If you have a lot of melanin in your irises, your eyes will appear brown or black. If you have very little, your eyes will appear blue. Intermediate amounts of melanin produces grey, green, hazel or varying shades of brown eye colour.

I would imagine that if it's down to melanin then the colour of the eye serves to protect it against UV radiation as does dark skin. I would think this is why the closer to the equator you are the darker the native people tend to be.

yes... you also need a certain amount of UV radiation for you to use vitamin D so that's why upper-latitude people are lighter.
