What is the origin of the word "cracker" made in reference to someone from the South?

I heard that "cracker" refered to the "cracking" of a whip.

It's a generally derogatory term for south Georgia/north Florida white people, and describes an uneducated, uncouth person of sly habits. 'Rednecks' are a fair cut above, with 'Po White Trash' being very close cousins to a cracker. The term is often attributed to cracking whips or cracking corn, but most likely goes further back to Elizabethan English origins.
