Could someone tell me about the roles of women in World War I, outside of serving in the military?

They were "land girls", basically they took the jobs of our servicemen and kept the country running while our "boys" were serving as soldiers.

Quite a lot went to work in factories that hadn't employed many women before - like in engineering and armaments. Women had worked in mills and such, but not in machining work. They also worked as bus drivers and conductors - wearing trousers, even....
