Aldous Huxley once said something was "a mixture of greenhouse and hospital ward furnished in the style of a dentist's operating chamber." To what was he referring?

Art Deco was everywhere then but I'm not sure it fits that description. So are we talking about a style rather than any particular structure?

A big fat yay to gmack and MrsAce! Yes he was referring to the Art Deco Movement of the 1920's.

    [Oct 26 04 9:57 PM] peasypod writes:

Maybe I should add: Art deco works exhibit aspects of Cubism, Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism-- with abstraction, distortion, and simplification, particularly geometric shapes and highly intense colours--celebrating the rise of commerce, technology, and speed.

It was also popularly considered to be an elegant style of cool sophistication in architecture and applied arts which range from luxurious objects made from exotic material to mass produced, streamlined items available to a growing middle class.
