    The effect of the moon on the tide has been known to navigators for millenia. Knowledge of the tidal ranges was often used in naval battles such as the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the English captain Sir Francis Drake.

    Yep, I believe Pytheas and Posidonius in about 300BC and 100BC were onto the concept quite signifigantly.
