Is it true or false that Einstein failed school?

Question #52188. Asked by Tadpole Angel.

It's another one of those "depends what you mean" answers I'm afraid. He wasn't a very successful student, but, no he didn't fail school.

You can get a summary of his early life at the wikipedia page for him, and there are plenty of links at the bottom of that page to other sites which include biographical info.

False, Einstein didn't fail school. As a matter of fact he didn't like rigid methods of instruction at school. He liked to study mathematics and science on his own for which he had a special aptitude. He wrote his first paper 'The Genesis of the Theory of Relativity' at the young age of 16.

He left school with two years to go to meet his family that had moved to Milan and with the hope to get enrolled in the Polytechnikum (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich although he was two years shy of the standard enrollment age of eighteen (which he mentions in the letter to Koch) and an uncertified school dropout. However, he was given special permission to take the entrance examinations and did well on the scientific section, but showed considerable gaps in the general section. It was arranged that he would enroll instead at the Gymnasium in Aarau, where he found a nurturing academic environment. He eventually went on to graduate in physics and mathematics from the Polytechnikum in 1900, and then began to focus his efforts on the Theory of Relativity.

That is false, he did not fail school. The other students did think he was stupid though.
