Who was the first king of all England, and where and when was he crowned?

Question #52219. Asked by MaggieG 5.

Between the ninth and tenth centuries the kings of Wessex evolved into the kings of the English, crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Consequently, no one is universally recognised as the first King of England. Some historians start with Egbert, the king of Wessex whose overlordship of the Saxons led visibly to the growth of an English crown, even though his immediate inheritors were still only crowned heads of smaller kingdoms.

Why is it, then, that on the wall of Bath Abbey there is a notice saying that Edgar, the first king of all the English, was crowned here in 957?

Sorry maggie, I have to agree with BB. As when I studied history at university, not the Sorbonne, I was taught that it was Egbert, which is supported by that great institution, Burkes peerage.

The Monastic Agreement (c 970) is probably the reason for the inscription in Bath Abbey. Arguments could be made for several different first kings including Cymbeline, Offa, Alfred the Great, or even William I. The reason for Egbert appears to be that he inherited the title 'bretwalda' meaning 'the ruler of all'.
