Just plain old fiction. But the place is real and the church is real.

I just watched a fascinating documentary on the "Little Ice Age", and thus posted a question about the "Headless Horseman" being a Hessian. The fact that the hessians took residence in the state of New Jersey does lend a small element of truth to Irving's story. Also, the set details in the Depp version of the movie are true in terms of accurately depicting life in the time and place the movie takes place in-and not to mention the religious beliefs and practices-and the medical training during those times.
