Could the King be Carlo Alberto and the island Monte Cristo? Darned if I can find the story or the hermit, though.

Alrighty then, the hermit identified himself being a shepherd from Maddalena. Now if THAT doesn't give it away...

You can relax now, you got it. Nice One!
Alberto, King of Sardinia was doing his hunting thing on the island of Tavolara (off Sardinia, Italy) , and came across this hermit dude Bartoleoni who was a shepherd from a nearby island of Maddalena. He found it very hard to believe that a peasant who, at the time were all illiterate, could speak numerous languages and was extremely well educated. This guy was also the head of two families. Alberto decided to crown this dide King of Tavolara. Because he was sovereign, the Italian government failed in it's attempt to prosecute him for bigamy. When he died his son Paolo was named his successor. 50 years later when he died the inhabitants of Tavolara proclaimed a republic.
