I was watching the CMA awards Tuesday and noticed
the earpieces that the artists were wearing. Does anyone know what it is that they're listening to?

They may not be listening to anything at all. See, when you sing, you can't hear yourself when there's music or fellow singers (such as the case with a choir) as accompanyment So, if you block one ear, you can hear your own voice, and know if you're on key or not. Now, this would work by using your hand, but since many play instruments, they don't have the free hand, thus the ear device.

Sometimes, it also serves the purpose of being 'fed' the tune (or harmonic key) to which they are singing, so that they stay on pitch. As for not hearing yourself sing, this classical singer says pish-posh. If your voice is that small that you cannot hear yourself over other instruments/and or singers, take voice lessons!
