Why are the gondola mooring poles in Venice painted with red and white spiral stripes like the barbershop symbol?

I know that originally the colored stripes on the mooring pole represented the family that owned it, and the gondoliers wore corresponding shirt colors. Like having your own private parking place. Standardization laws have since consolidated them, but I have no idea why the poles are candy-cane striped.
