Yay (and a quick one too) for the road, Peasy, but there is another reason why their books in particular were used.

Do you mean because their pages are so absorbant and "unslushy" which enables a better pulp?

Yup, that'll be the one. Absorbent not to be confused with absorbing. The contents themselves are very slushy and certainly don't need converting to pulp.
Did you know, though, that Mills and Boon also publish chemistry books.
