Tough one peasy. Searching for references to popes and excommunication doesn't narrow it down much; adding references to mistresses as a filter thins it down some, but leaves plenty of medieval candidates. My guess is John XII, who is certainly in the top five 'Popes Who Should Have Been In Some Other Business'.

sorry stew.....but you are right about John XII being notorious. It was during his tenure that Edward Gibbon noted (and I am guessing, extra points for telling me the exact quotation) "...women were afraid to honour St. Peter, for fear of being ravished by his successor."

Ok, I'll permit myself one more guess (and narrow it down for everyone else if nothing more). How about Alexander VI, the father of Lucretia Borgia?

What about Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia)? He was notorious too.

Yay to both stewy and anassa! I'm reading a very interesting book at the moment about the Borgias. Amazing what scandal you come across when regarding popes...

Oh, meant to add, the funny thing about Alexander VI's threat with excommunication was because she refused to see him or talk to him....Go figure.
