That sounds like Mark Spitz in swimming at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Seven gold medals. He'd already won two in Mexico four years before.

Ray Ewry of the United States holds the record for the most total golds. From 1900 to 1908, and including the 1906 Intercalated Games, (the 1906 Summer Olympics), he won 10 golds in the standing long jump, standing high jump and standing triple jump - events that no longer exist.
