Where do we get the phrase déjà vu?

    Question #52517. Asked by joezhou300. (Nov 18 04 7:02 PM)

    My French dictionary says:

deja vu n [F, adj., lit., already seen] (1903) 1 a: the illusion of remembering scenes and events when experienced for the first time b: a feeling that one has seen or heard something before 2: something overly or unpleasantly familiar.

It is French for "already seen". If you feel you have already felt or heard something before, we should probably say "deja touche" or "deja entendu" (with appropriate accents) but nobody ever does.

It is a phrase that refers to keeping confidences, derived from one god's bribery of another. In antiquity, certain doors and rooms would be adorned with the item to which the phrase refers, in order to indicate that what was said within would not be repeated elsewhere.
