The number of registered dog breeds varies by country and organization. I believe that since most current domestic dog breeds can interbreed with the wolf, (and so the domestic dog is sometimes considered a subspecies) that would be the answer to the second half of your question. I thought it was probably wolves, but as humans originated in Africa where, nowadays at least, jackals and African wild dogs are more widespread, I wondered if today's pet dogs might be descended more from these. Nov 20 04, 6:05 AM
